Strategy & Planning
To keep abreast of new developments, trends and ideas in the global market to formulate overall strategy for categories within specific category groups
Ability to set the budget for the categories and prepare the long-term plan based on the category plan
Communicate the category plan within the organization to Formats, Marketing and Supply Chain
Identify new product strategic opportunities and recommend inclusion into category range

Negotiations
Negotiate with suppliers (especially ones, who cut across different categories) on all aspects contained in the general agreements and the appendixes, assortment, pricing, discounts, promotions, payment terms, trading terms, expected service levels of DSD etc
Handle escalated supplier negotiations and oversee ongoing negotiations. Conduct mock-up negotiation (role-play + FAQ training/workshop)
Monitor build-down and recovery plan
Present business case for discontinuing vendors to HOD
Review joint supplier growth scorecard

Assortment Mix
Develop and ensure appropriate assortment mix of the category group according to format guidelines, market, consumer preferences and assortment plan to realise significant improvements in the sales and cash margin of the category
Evaluate and validate SKU’s selected per switching box and decision tree and present to the HOD
Provide input in the development of planograms per format according to guidelines and follow up on planogram implementation in store
Oversees business plan for new range
Signs off annual trading terms, growths and grids (all financial agreements – vendor trading agreements)

Category Group Performance

Set the budget and parameters for the category group and monitor monthly performance
Monitor and revise budget by analysing sales; cash margin per category and other measures per category
Review category group KPI’s daily; weekly and monthly. Obtain input from the Category Buyers on any deviations and where appropriate address issues with Supply chain affecting the achievement of category group KPI’s
Ensure the Category Buyer tracks and monitors the performance of the Private Label brand and participation is achieved.
Monitor the execution of the Category action plan
Review economic factors influencing the overall category group performance

Process Innovation

Identify improvement areas in the category process and make recommendations
Participate in ad hoc projects to improve merchandising processes and outcomes

Demand Planning

Monitor Demand Planning KPI’s for category group and request corrective actions where there are deviations. Product and Master data Management

Collect and check that all the category master data input is according to agreement with suppliers and accurate for the master data team to process and optimise the information flow
Ensure that the master data is correct and up to date at all times
