Key Responsibilities:

•Work with a research team on all aspects of conducting research, surveys and the analysis of resultant data and other relevant data sources;
•Write up research results for conference presentations, research reports and manuscripts for publication;
•Participating in the planning, undertaking and management of research fieldwork;
•Analysis of survey data and data from other secondary sources;
•Assist with literature reviews and other secondary data searches
•Participating in the formulation of research questions and projects;
•Conduct research and facilitate exchange of information among colleagues;
•Collection and analysis of data and preparing research reports and manuscripts for publication
•Assist with the Managing, planning and coordinating of project meetings, dissemination workshops, policy roundtables and events

Minimum Requirement….

Key requirements:

•A minimum of a Honours degree in Social Sciences (particularly Development Studies, Economics, Sociology, or related disciplines), ideally registered for a Masters;
•Previous research experience is an advantage
•Intellectual and personal integrity, a well-developed work ethic, and drive
•Fluency in English and either isiXhosa/ SeTswana/ Afrikaans.
•Competency in computer programmes (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), data analysis software (Stata, SPSS, Atlas.ti, etc.), and referencing software (e.g., Mendeley, Endnote)
•A sound academic record;
•An innovative thinker.
•Sound written and verbal communication skills;
•The capacity to work under pressure and to work after hours if required;
•Possess a valid driver’s license;
•Applicants must be South African citizens.
•Previous work or fieldwork experience with the HSRC will be an added advantage;

Introduction
The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) is a specialist research centre within the Human Sciences Research Council that is dedicated to producing policy relevant research and statistical analysis in the domain of science, technology and innovation, in the African context. CeSTII has a vision to be a thought and practice leader, as well as an acknowledged site of excellence in its field, and aims to consolidate its position as a value-adding component of South Africa’s national innovation system. CeSTII includes specialists in the area of science, technology and innovation measurement and policy, as well as economic development and other social science disciplines.

CeSTII wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to fill a position that will become vacant, in its office in Cape Town, effective 1 December 2022. The main responsibility is to build and strengthen the capacity of the Centre in the field of innovation surveys which includes managing the survey process, analyzing data and producing fact sheets, reports, policy briefs and so on to communicate with stakeholders. The level of appointment will depend on qualifications, experience, publication record and recent performance.

Key responsibilities:
•Design, conceptualize and execute multi-year research programmes, focused on Innovation measurement;
•Design and manage all aspects of large scale, national surveys to international standards, and contribute to debates on appropriate methodologies for measuring the socio-economic impact of science, technology and innovation;
•Develop and update research instruments, research designs, and sampling frames;
•Manage and undertake field work for large scale research studies including surveys;
•Conduct statistical data analysis or interpretation of such analysis, particularly on Innovation and economic development;
•Undertake analysis of data and develop policy relevant research outputs and data from other secondary sources;
•Provide technical research support to researchers in the HSRC and external clients;
•Provide mentorship to junior researchers in terms of research skills and in further studies;
•Prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication of a high standard;
•Communicate research findings at conferences, policy dialogues, workshops and other meetings;
•Disseminate research findings and implications through various modalities;
•Participate in the development of proposals to seek external funding from both local and international funding agencies;
•Publish in the peer reviewed scientific literature;
•Develop personal academic competencies through formal and informal training activities.

Minimum Requirement….

Key requirements:

•PhD, or Masters, several years’ experience, 3 publications, most sole/first-authored
•Experience in the interpretation of economic indicators will be an advantage;
•Training in science, technology and innovation measurement and/or policy, economics or econometrics will be an advantage;
•An established research career as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications;
•Experience in survey research methods, ideally with strong quantitative skills;
•Ability to work across disciplinary boundaries;
•Understanding of South Africa’s political economy and economic development challenges;
•Ability to mentor interns and lead research teams;
•Experience of engaging with policy-makers;
•Ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.
•Experience in science, technology and innovation indicators and measurement.
