Key responsibilities:

• Execute preventative and corrective maintenance tasks, on the testing, training and research equipment and systems, based on facility planned maintenance requirements, and unplanned breakdowns;
• Manage the work of contractors as required for facility equipment maintenance;
• Implement maintenance strategies and develop maintenance procedures;
• Ensure the calibration of laboratory equipment;
• Perform pre-operations checks and controls for ready to start prior to putting equipment into service after repairs or after a break in utilisation;
• Operate the testing equipment as part of functionality checks or trouble shooting;
• Accountable for the execution, filling-in and return of the maintenance work-orders;
• Develop, plan and execute general planned maintenance activities and upgrade tasks at Cottesloe laboratories and at the Kloppersbos mine fire and explosion facility;
• Review and update the maintenance plan of each facility and assist with budget considerations;
• General mechanical fitting and turning using workshop machinery related to tooling, test equipment repair and upgrade;
• Work in compliance and in support of the applicable management system per area e.g., ISO 17025, ISO 45001;
• Ensure general GMR 2.7 and DMR checks as well as corrective maintenance activities;
• Work independently to resolve problems utilising technical expertise;
• Perform technical and project management activities;
• Analyse and screen corrective maintenance job cards and burning maintenance issues for opportunities to perform route cause failure analysis to prevent future failures;
• Attend to procedural and equipment issues that arise and require engineering evaluation and direction to improve specific maintenance procedures;
• Analyse spare parts inventory requirements and continuously improve inventory control;
• Manage the quality assurance processes and to maximise the utilisation of equipment;
• Initiate and manage the development of improved technical standards and systems to build effective operational support.

Minimum Requirements…

Key qualifications, skills, and experience:

• A National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent NQF Level 6 qualification with Mechanical Engineering focus;
• Certifications/qualifications in the following areas of competence will be advantageous;
  • BTech in mechanical engineering;
  • Millwright trade certificate or;
  • Fitter and turner trade certificate;
  • Course on pneumatic machines;
  • Course on control in instrumentation;
  • Scaffolding erector;
  • OHS training (GMR 2.7);
  • Course in hydraulic machines.
• At least three year’s working experience in industrial plant or machine systems maintenance and installation;
• During the above three years’ of experience there should be evidence of two years working experience in:
  • Instrumentation
  • Plant operation
  • Hydraulic machines
  • Electro-mechanical systems
  • Dichotomy between plant maintenance role and plant operation roles under production control
  • Maintenance and operation of legacy systems (e.g. old hydraulic or electro-mechanical systems)
  • Supervision of skilled maintenance trades
• Competencies: attention to detail, building relationships, conceptual thinking, customer service orientation, flexibility -and adaptability, investigation orientation, planning and organising, problem solving, teamwork as well as verbal and written communication.
• Operational requirements include:
  • Lifting equipment operator
  • Driver’s license
